Wonder how she got there?

Meh, not much of an title, or image for that matter, and there is enough problems in this image that I really wanted to do a re-render, but it took 23 hours, at 6500 samples (still not enough for complete clarity) ahh well, learned a lot about python scripting, and bump mapping (on the trees).

Made with Blender, Photoshop, and Jmc2obj: www.jmc2obj.net/

Render Information:
-Took 23!??! hours to render on 6 out of my 8 i7 CPU cores
-Rendered in Cycles at 6500 samples

Other Information:
-
She has 130,000 hairs (Obliterated my laptop)
-I kinda rushed this image and it took me only about 4 or 5 days which I feel kinda bad about, since I could have put more into it, but then again it was a side project

Anyway Hope You find it mildly nice to look at and as always STAY AWESOME!!!!

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
this is definitely by far one of the best pictude of the most hilariously fan-built background character (well, at least 3D), I love so much the non-SFM models, they're much more balanced in shapes, brighter in colours and very, very, very, very detailed (not that I mean to say SFM isn't good, but... meh) I'd really love to learn 3D modelling and animating, but really I don't know if there's any place where I can learn it if not school, and at the same time I don't wanna make of this "the thing of my life"... hope I will be able finding the right course.

Thank You so much!

Funnily enough this is actually the same SFM model, just edited quite a bit, and in a different software, I prefer other platforms over SFM as well, it has an advantages however, due to its extremely popular use, and wide availability of models, assets, and tutorials. Its a good place to start learning animation fundamentals, and a good book (that I find extremely usefull for animation) that I could not live without is "The The Animator's Survival Kit, that's by the director of animation of "Who framed Roger Rabbit"

I use a software called "Blender" and its a free open source professional CG software that can achieve photo realistic results. It has a good modeling workflow and a good animation toolset, but it can be really daunting at first and takes years (just like most other forms of art) to really understand and master. A good place to start with blender would be these links:

First Place to go: Blender Cookie's Intro to Blender: cgcookie.com/blender/cgc-cours…

Blender Cookie is the best source of professional advanced and beginner tutorials, but some of them can cost money, after finishing that course I recommend using CG cookie for many of its professional and extremely high quality tutorials as long as you intend to use blender, even the most advanced users find something usefull out of their tutorials

Check out Blenderguru: www.blenderguru.com/

Blender Guru offers great personal podcasts and tutorials and is where many of my knowledge comes from and is awesome! I started here

Blend Tuts can be usefull: www.blendtuts.com/
Blender Diplom can be usefull: www.blenderdiplom.com/en/
And the official blender tut page: www.blender.org/support/tutori…
and just google around and spend lots of time figuring things out yourself, there is no one way to make art, and there is not a tutorial for everything.

Check out Creative Shrimp for great free tutorials and inspiration (seriously amazing artist runs it arguably the best blender artist out there, or at least one of them): www.creativeshrimp.com/

Blender has one of the best communities around and such can help you with lots of problems and be sure to ask for critique on your works.

Other usefull pages:
- blenderartists.org/forum/
- www.creativeshrimp.com/how-to-…
- www.creativeshrimp.com/resourc… (SUPER DUPER USEFULL)

Don't be afraid to experiment, and if your work looks like crap, who cares just try to learn as much as you can and youll do fine, I'm a massive noob at this and I'm only 15 years old! but its my passion and I want to do it for my life.

CG is something that will take a lot from you, its frustrating, its painful, and its something you really have to want to do, but if you want to do it, then what's to stop you.

Either way whatever you decide to do for a living, or a hobby, or as a goal, just spend time on it, practice, and learn, the world is full of beautiful things and opportunities, you can make art that makes it just that much more beautiful.

PS sorry if this is not the kind of response you wanted, or if it was too much text, I talk a lot :)

A long rensponse indeed, I'll try to reply in steps like you wrote:
-Wow, you really cleanded it up really well for making something like that in this... a shame that I can't make online transactions or I would have already bought that book
-I already knew it
-Wow, these are some really great links! They will give me a really good headstart
-15... really? You definitely broke me for something like an hour (I'm 15 too)... anyway, I really love this thing too even if I want to keep it as a side project of my life
-I have tons of other dreams in my mind, but a lot of them originate from hobbies I can't start doing because my parents won't allow me doing them (I'm in a technologic-informatic school (and I hope I translated it right) and I actually have tons of projects that I want to make but at the same time my parents are definitely too much caring and they don't wanna make me "play" with soda and magnesium or electrical circuits, and my mother is even of those "pacifists without knowing what they're against" so neither H.E.M.A., clay shooting, archery or airsoft for me... even if it seems the idea of throwing me out of an airplane for sky diving doesn't disturb her)
-You and me both, only you're surely better at Blender (well, I din't open it yet)

I forgot that always post that i use blender in the description, sorry for redundancy (main reason for the long response, was that I'd rather do that than hw :) )

Likewise I'll try to match my responses with how you said it.

-Funnily enough I forgot quite a few links, if you want more just ask
-yeah I'm 15 (a guy who broke me was 14 but his stuff got used in a promo trailer for a blender product by one of the best artists in the biz ;_; )
-Lots of dreams i have as well, (astronaut!!) but i believe that no matter what i can always full fill them as long as i put the effort into it! Archery is actually my schools main sport! but as long as your carefull you can do most things safely, whether that be soda and magnesium, or airsoft!
-iv only been using blender (albiet daily) for about 8? months now, i started in august but the biggest thing is spending the time on it, my Bliss image took months! If you want to learn blender, the only way is too, well start learning blender :) when you finally create your first image that you can be proud of (anytime you make anything at all you should be proud), and getting your first comment "Thats Amazing" is a wonderful feeling.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it, as for your render it looks AWESOME, I don't usually see people using Sketchup, and indigo for renders, and such this makes your render unique from many others, personally I prefer to use Blender (its free, and extremely professional) I recommend you check it out!  8 hours is quite a long time, but not very long for refraction renders, those can kill systems! Good job with the render I always love to find other non-sfm 3D pony artists (not to say SFM can't pull off beautiful things), and have a watch!

Thanks again for the comment and you can find more 3D pony artists in the group MyLittle3D which posts non SFM renders, its sister group SFM Ponies posts SFM renders. and likewise keep up the amazing work and STAY AWESOME!

It looks really nice! the reflection in the glass was a really nice touch.

The only thing that looks weird to me is those ferns in the back.

Yeah those ferns almost made me re-render the whole thing, but 23 hours was a tad too long for me to risk a re-render, but it wasn't a major project and like I said repeatedly in the description, not my best work.

Once I figure out branched ray tracing I might do a re-render anyways

Thanks for the complement! :)

Totally understandable. That kind of render time cannot be good for your PC or your sanity. It looks really good besides that small detail anyhow :).

And I'm always happy to comment. ;)

lel, 23 hours is really bad for a CPU, you can burn it, maybe with 1000 samples or less this render would work good, and i don't know if you used a low poly collision body for the hair physics, but it should make the render faster, or using spot lights instead of ambient oclusion.

By the way, Great job with the hair :D

I actually used 0 physics for the hair, just grooming in particle edit mode, but sadly 1000 samples or less wouldn't have worked in this image at least without branched ray tracing or caustic fakery. If you zoom in even at 6500 samples there are still noise problems, due to the glass being there, 23 hours really isn't that bad considering Pixar uses thousands of computers to render their films and still one frame takes 30 hours, pro images can easily take days. In addition i didn't have any ao in this render

Also thanks for the comment and complement :) Best of luck to ya!

6500 samples, maaaan used branched path rendering, you could get away with half the passes for the same quality!

Yeah, I was just lazy I guess, Mostly I just focused on getting certain things with the image right, not optimizations, but I need to learn that stuff for my next render for sure, will do and thanks for the reminder, STAY AWESOME! your comments are always great to have :)

I just went ahead and made a decent render sample setup and then saved it as a start file, so it's all preset when I make a new scene. Also for CPU rendering go into the performance tab and make sure your tiles are between 32x32 and 64x64 and if you're going somewhere and coming back progressive render can be a neat tool, but if you just want the fastest possible for a preset pass count leave that off, I noticed you loose about 10-15% the performance, probably less on an i7. Anyway, good luck on finding the sweet spot!

customizing the tile sizes is something i don't usually do, i really should though, thanks for all that useful info performance optimizations is on the long list of things to learn, thanks again and good luck to you as well on your projects!

yeah, school and hw make it hard, but as soon as spring break comes along i'll have all the free time in the world (besides driving school) I'f the world worked my way I would do this all day everyday, always learning as much as I could, if it took me weeks to learn then it would be worth it, that's why I have the patience to wait for renders, because its always worth it to me.
