Candle by Shastro Candle by Shastro
I wanted to add some candles to the AtN scene, but they couldn't fit in the scene :(

Not looking for any particular crtique with this one, but if you have any good advice feel free :)

Just something I made while messing around

Stay Awesome!

Simply stunning, Shastro.

It looks absolutely gorgeous; every bit of the lighting looks perfect and the melting wax looks just like the real thing.

Thank You Destro!

I'm so glad you think the wax looks so real :)

I always love getting such nice comments

Vertex noise? High subdiv? SSS?

Well done.

Thank You! I simply sculpted the candle, with a voronoi texture displacement for some extra bumps. Sub-Surface scattering was used like crazy :)

Very nice!  So how did ya end up "sculpting" the candle?

I first did a little bit of shaping in edit mode, then did some sculpting with dynamic topology, and added a voronoi texture displacement for some extra bumps and stuff.

Wow......can I see the blend?  I still haven't gotten much success with texture displacement outside of tutorials.

Sure, though its big and contains my entire fan art scene, the candle is on the first layer of the second group of layers. It has some spoilers in it for the AtN though "sooooo.... Watch Out!"

I don't have a scene with just the candle

ere ya go, find the candle and check its settings: sta.sh/0lq3z80u8p6

Okay, I got it downloaded an open...woah baby!!  That's lookin' insane!  Like psychoticly insane.

Also, can you explain the smoke sim?   I'm wanting to make muzzle flash and residual smoke, but I've got no idea how to particle sims in Blender.

(And I found no spoilers)

For the spoilers I just meant spoilers for what my final image will look like, making it less of a surprise, but the smoke sim is a little complicated, its not too bad, but you will probably learn more from looking at the settings in the blend file than you will from me, or you can go to google hangouts, since I added you to a chat with Dpplad on there.

As for a muzzle flash and residual smoke, I'm not sure, you'll have to experiment with those, and it depends on whether you're looking for a animation or a still.

Ah!  Well I can definately say that I was surprised!  That looks incredible!

I've only barely tinkered with smoke sim, so I'll have to try to replicate yours first in my own, then we'll see. And I'd love to do a hangout sometime,  to get to know each other better and maybe discuss some future projects/collabs even!

Thanks Again

Though I have already Added you into a chat with Dpplad, all you should need to do is log in, though I might've accidentally added the wrong person :T

I'd say this is pretty damn perfect!! How did you get the melted wax to dribble like that? And the grime in the crevasses is perfect!! Is that a flat mesh you used for the flame? or did you make it with a volume emission? I must know all the secrets you put into this candle!!

And if you did, the asymmetrical base is a really nice touch, if it's not tilted a bit then it must be the wax fooling my eyes. Too bad you couldn't fit these into the scene, it would have fit so flipping well!

Thank You! I got the wax to dribble just by modeling it, each is a simple mesh with a solidify modifier and a voronoi texture displacement. The grime is a dust texture and a simple diffuse shader, I used the geometry nodes normal output and a separate RGB node to isolate the top facing parts of the mesh, along with a layer weight facing attribute to get a facing effect, I used that whole set up as a mix factor between a red diffuse shader and a clean metal material :P

Even though I had a tutorial for the candle flame, I was kinda lazy and simply Photoshoped it in :(

I may have found a way to fit it into the scene, though currently it looks weird :T

You did phenomenal modeling the wax manually, I had to make sure you weren't using fluid sims or something it was so believable, I need to learn the geometry nodes a lot better, that's really holding back a lot of textures I could be making, now I'm even more convinced of that.

meh, lazy is the inception to invention ;)

I hope you find a way to fit it into the shot, that you like.

Thanks So much!

Geometry nodes can be very useful.

I have found a way into the shot, and now I've smoked simmed some candle smoke, I was too lazy to make the flame, so the very tip of the candle is off shot. Its just hard to make it look right because of the angle of the scene.

See what ya think of it so far: i.imgur.com/6huUSes.png

Also I'm still a little unsure what you mean with the horn, I've changed it a bit, but I might end up leaving that way, and the lighting I'm finding hard to change

here are 2 horns I made on the fly, I got called away. Just look on bottom layers 1 and 2 sta.sh/02cj8ke3sjau

What if you put it off frame for that shot and do an angle from the side some time later to showcase it? Maybe that could be a more gloomy dark scene too. Just have 2 or 3 candles light the scene, maybe have a window for some moon light, even some rayshafts would look amazing! Then you could show the smoke better too.

Idk Dpplad, I've been doing this for so long, I had thought of the gloomy dark scene, and the window for the moon light, and the rayshafts, but I've spent a couple hours messing around with rayshafts and I can't get the volumetric to look good, or the window lighting itself, I'm not sure how many more weeks I feel like going into this.

So the last remaining problems might end up in the final image, I'm not sure.

Its starting to look even better though :)

I've designed this image to work from only one angle, the hair looks awful, everything looks awful from any other angle than that one, so unless there is some mega dof, I can't do a side view

Thank you for the models, thats a cool and neat way to get almost perfect horns, though such an even pattern might be unrealistic,

As for horns that's why I tossed in the own not using a deform modifier, you can even make that one crooked if needed, also moving the rings around and such. But up to you. Maybe apply the other and drag the lines around a little?

I'm sure you know you can't use sun lamps for volumetrics, and portals help too for reducing noise in rooms. But I hear ya on completion time, sometimes you just gotta let the bird/pegasus fly free. I'm glad it's looking better. GL
